The Young Visiters or Mr Salteena's Plan is a comic masterpiece that has delighted generations of readers since it was first published in 1919. A classic story of life and love in later Victorian England as seen from the nursery window, it was written in 1890 by nine-year-old Daisy Ashford.

It all starts when Alfred Salteena, who is 'not quite the right side of the blanket', takes young Ethel Montacue to stay with his friend Bernard Clarke... Daisy Ashford has an exquisite eye for matchmaking and manners in English society, and her tale, with its hilarious observation and idiosyncratic spelling, is as irresistible today as it ever was.

This edition of The Young Visiters is illustrated with drawings by Posy Simmonds which are as enchanting and witty as the story. The text has been transcribed from the original manuscript and includes J.M. Barrie's famous preface to the first edition. The BBC1 adaptation of the novel, starring Jim Broadbent as Mr Salteena, was originally broadcast in 2003.

An oddity but a kind of delightful one if you know the backstory. I enjoyed the movie, starring Hugh Laurie, more than the book. It was the charming and hilarious movie that lead me to read it. A very short read, less than an hour. Worth buying on the kindle. I would be curious to know what any children make of it.

Whatever you believe about the authorship (was it really Daisy Ashford or naughty uncle JM Barry?) of this slender volume, it makes hilarious reading. The precocious authoress portrays the world of her (not much) elders through innocent but crystal clear eyes. Her words are chosen unerringly. Much of it demands to be read aloud.

This short book is rather a novelty, having been written by the author as a 9 year old in 1890, though not published until 1919. While obviously displaying the inexperienced in life approach one might expect, it shows an understanding of narrative and plot, and an eye for descriptive detail unusual for one so young, The author wrote other stories at a young age, including one when even younger than when she wrote this one, some of which have been lost. Don't expect great drama, obviously, but this shows some familiarity with, and ability to laugh at, some of the habits of the time.
